Essential Clay Handling Tips

There are a few tips that are absolutely essential to clay crafting.

1.First and foremost, we have to keep our hands and tools well moisturized during the shaping stage of our art. This is to make sure that the clay does not stick to our hands and tools; keeping the clay in one piece when being shaped. I use a common moisturizing cream available in stores here called Q.V but you can use whatever that is available to you.

2. We will have to keep kneading the clay in our hands until it soft and pliable before shaping it so that it doesn’t crack when it does eventually dries. On a normal sized chunk, it shouldn’t take more than 1 minute to achieve this.

3. If our chunk of clay is shaped into something we are not satisfied with, we can always try again as long as the clay is not dried.

3. The clay will need time to air dry before it strengthens and can be handled freely. Before it completely dries, make sure we store the unfinished product so that it is not pressed down by anything that would cause dents on it. Allow 2 days for Toy Clay and Textured Clay to dry. Allow 1 day for Flower Clay and Leaf Clay to dry.

4. Unused clay should be kept in a zip lock bag (provided in our packaging) to stop it from drying prematurely. During the end of a session, put the clay in an airtight container and it should keep well for months.

The Yenji Clay that we sell is highly pliable and dries into a smooth and well colored artwork. We have tried using other clay here at Earthy Arts and just couldn’t get the same results; hence the reason why we are stocking this brand. But try it for yourself, compare and see what works for you. Clay crafting, after all is best experienced 🙂

Happy Crafting.
